Props and Sets

Prop-making appeals to me because each object has to belong to a larger world. A successful prop does not only look finished; it supports the story, works safely in the hands of a performer, and fits the visual language of the production. This requires a balance between imagination and practicality, especially when a piece needs to be lightweight, durable, comfortable, and completed within a tight timeline.

For school productions, I have created and adapted props using a mix of digital design and hands-on fabrication. Some pieces began as models that needed to be altered for the stage, while others required new solutions because the available materials or performance needs changed. I enjoy that kind of problem-solving, where the final object has to satisfy the director’s vision while still working for the people who will use it.

This work has strengthened my ability to collaborate across creative and technical needs. Props sit between design and performance so communication is essential. I value the process of refining an object through feedback, testing, and adjustment until it feels like a natural part of the production.

Props for Hadestown Teen

Created props in the style of 1920s miner headlamps for the production of Hadestown Teen at Crofton House School. The housing for an LED headlamp required a 3D printed component and leather head strap made out of XPS foam. Used CAD software to model housing, and sewed foam to flannelette fabric for performer’s comfort.

Props for Finding Nemo Jr.

Created props for the production in the Junior school for Finding Nemo. The props were over life-sized turtle and barracuda layered cardboard elements, with handles at the back for ease of holding for the performers. I also scanned in student drawings and cut them out for decorations for a home aquarium set piece.

Prop Planning

Technology Used: TinkerCAD, Bambu Studio, sketches.

Headlamp Prop Prototype 1
Starting with a LED headlamp, I modelled a housing for the first prototype that would surround the lamp. It was much too big.

Microphone Prop
Original model by @ianbradley258. Modified in TinkerCAD, assembled using wire, wood and printed parts.

Headlamp Prop Prototype 4
This was the final prototype, after measuring and rethinking the size and headband.

Whistle Prop/Set Piece
This old whistle was attached to the set, and was non-functional, but used as a prop to end the factory workday in Hades musical numbers.
